The chairman of NG Bailey, the UK’s largest private-owned building services provider, says the company will continue to grow its offering organically and seek potential acquisitions.
This will help expand its capabilities across the building infrastructure – from initial design through to facilities management and refurbishment.
Nimble Thompson said that despite the current difficulties in the construction market, NG Bailey was confident its long-term strategy of ‘For Life in Buildings’ – taking an integrated, ‘whole-life’ approach to buildings is the right one.
He added: “We have added new and complementary skills through the acquisition of several innovative technology businesses in recent years, such as s2s, and we are keen to identify other suitable acquisitions to consolidate our total offering for the life of a building.
“At the same time, we will maintain the organic development of our own expertise that has been the cornerstone of our long-term success.
“The combination of the two will enable us to respond more effectively to the needs of our customers, and capitalise on the opportunities in the marketplace – both now and in the future.”
The company is at the forefront of innovative sustainable building services and, as part of its ‘For Life in Buildings’ strategy, is working with partners across the entire construction process to improve the overall environmental performance of buildings.
It is using its own estate to test a number of these innovative technologies. Its new Central Scotland office, for example, has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and is expected to secure an Energy Performance Certificate A rating.
NG Bailey also announced that sales rose in the year to 29th February 2008 by 12 per cent to £525m, and prospects for the next financial year are encouraging.
Pre-tax profits for the year (£7.98m vs £17.69m the previous year) were impacted by contractual issues within its rail business, and also by significant cost increases in a number of raw materials, such as copper.
“The underlying performance of our business is strong, and this can be seen in the fact that our order book for the next financial year is more than 80 per cent full,” said Mr Thompson.
