I graduated in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Leeds in 2006 and became aware of the NG Bailey Graduate Programme in the summer of 2007 having spent a year travelling after leaving university.
I was determined to find the right company for me, one that had the right values and ambition. I was immediately impressed with the package that NG Bailey was offering to successful candidates. On further inspection of the company and its vision it was clear that the graduate programme would provide me with just what I was looking for: A framework for developing my career through employment and further education with a leader in industry.
The early stages of the recruitment process involved a brief telephone interview. Following this, I was invited to attend an assessment day at Denton Hall along with several other candidates. We were assessed on our numerical, reasoning and verbal skills. We were also required to prepare a brief presentation and to complete a team-working exercise. This was a draining day, but it was valuable to me as I learnt a lot about the company and its people. The final stage was a formal interview with a senior member of the group.
My fellow graduates and I started our employment in early September 2007 and were inducted into the group over a week of activities at Denton Hall. The induction involved a range of interactive experiences with employees across the group and some very senior members. It was made clear to us throughout the week how important the graduate programme was to the group as a whole and its strategic growth. The week also gave us new graduates a fantastic opportunity to get to know each other and to interact with graduates from the previous intake.
I was relocated to BBS Reading after the induction week, and over the course of my placement there I had a range of experiences. After being warmly welcomed and introduced to the staff, I spent time in procurement, project management and estimating departments settling in the Mechanical Design team. My line manager selected a range of small projects which gave me a good grounding in the department allowing me to learn as well as providing a useful function in the team.
I moved to the Professional Services Division for my second placement at the Bailey Teswaine headquarters in Lanark Square London. From there, I was seconded to work on the RBSG Managed Services contract. I was afforded a great deal of flexibility in pursuing the right type of experience for me. My role was initially a temporary research position which evolved into a permanent position. My responsibilities now include the compilation of the monthly performance reports as well as the co-ordination of Project work on the contract. I have also worked with Deutsche Bank in mapping their processes for work in Data Centres.
