The Birmingham branch of Bailey had a significant role in the successful completion of the new heart and lung unit at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton. The contract formed part of the UK’s largest NHS projects, funded directly by the Treasury. The new facilities allow much greater use of interventional cardiology, a hi-tech procedure that can help prevent the need for open-heart surgery for heart disease patients.
The Bailey team completed the integrated mechanical and electrical services for this project within 22 months. The team was on site during that time and faced a number of challenges.
The high tech project proved difficult to coordinate within the constraints of the building space and required a site-based CAD team to ensure the services could be installed correctly.
Despite forty per cent of the project being redesigned and the Bailey team encountering many project variations from the client, the handover and schedule was not compromised.
The co-ordination of services, the high standards required in the hospital theatres and laboratories and the work of the energy centre was all achieved, due to the strength of the teamwork.
“Taylor Woodrow ’s relationship with the mechanical and electrical contractors, NG Bailey, at the New Cross Hospital, proved a huge partnership success. Not only did the project teams integrate but they worked jointly with the client to successfully deliver a complex building. As a result, the client has been complimentary of this partnership and the standard of the services installation.”
