Forty year showcase for NG Bailey talent

Leading building services provider NG Bailey marked 40 years as an apprenticeship champion and leading vocational trainer by opening the doors of its Engineering Academy for a unique showcase on the 29th October.

The company is recognised as having one of the industry’s foremost apprenticeship schemes.  The Academy, run by the company’s building services division, has held Beacon status from the Department for Education & Skills and is a Centre for Vocational Excellence.

The open day, attended by apprentices past and present, was presided over by guest of honour Keith Marshall OBE, chief executive of SummitSkills.  Industry representatives were given a unique perspective on NG Bailey’s heritage, which began as far back as 1934, when founding partner Noel Bailey began recruiting apprentices.

Established in 1969, with one class, the Academy has been the springboard for the careers of some five thousand apprentices.  Many have gone on to take key roles within the construction industry, with a number still forming an important part of NG Bailey’s current business.  Today, the academy is recognised amongst the best in the construction sector with up to 100 apprentices recruited each year.

Martin Bailey, chief innovation officer for the company and a past apprentice, said: “Our fortieth celebration not only provided the opportunity to celebrate the great achievements of our people but also reminded employers of the vital role apprentices play in today’s construction industry.

“Some companies will undoubtedly see the present economic climate as a reason to slash their training budget. At NG Bailey we have reduced volumes in line with business performance and prioritised our spending so as not to lose the raw talent of young apprentices that, over time, will add value to our business.

“We are proud to reach this milestone and to demonstrate that taking on apprentices gives employers the opportunity to train someone to work in a way that fits their unique businesses.”

NG Bailey’s drive to encourage and celebrate apprentices culminated in an awards ceremony to recognise the achievements of its current crop of students. Awards were presented for the best plumbing student, the best building services student, the best heating and ventilation student and the best electrical student.
